On Wednesday, Nov. 7, I awakened early, which is normal for me, but that morning felt different.

You see, I did not stay up election night to watch the results.

So, I came to work, made coffee, turned on the computer, and there it was, “Four more years.”

I must tell you that was disappointing for me.

You see, I am not a political person, but as director of your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce, I consider it my duty to protect our members, most of which are small businesses, and this administration has not been kind to small business.

You must be aware of the health care obligation changes as well as the increased tax structure changes that will cause any business considering expanding to reconsider, and many more to close their doors.

It breaks my heart as I consider just what four more years of this current trend might mean, not to mention the gridlock that may well continue to paralyze needed results in Washington.

We are truly a divided country.

However, I must say on the positive side, Americans did get out and vote in this election. You exercised your rights in record numbers.

So, moving forward, what can I do? Better yet, what can we do?

I have no way of knowing this, but have you ever written or called your congressman or senator to voice your feelings on issues being discussed on a federal or state level?

Consider this, just because we elect a person to office, we simply cannot expect that person to make decisions based only on their concerns or beliefs. We must provide input for those we elect. This is how we can move forward. If each of us will flood our elected leaders with letters and telephone calls, we can make a difference. If you are reading this and agree but do not have your elected leaders’ addresses and telephone numbers, please do not let that stop you.

By simply calling Liz, Michelle, or me at 276-4274, we will provide the requested information. We can make a difference. If not for you, why not get involved for future generations? Don’t you feel they deserve a better America?

Here at your chamber we will continue to work closely with state and federal elected leaders by collecting information from our members and passing it on.

We will also bring information to you from our discussions from those elected to serve. Elected leaders tell us they vote on issues based on several types of information, one of those being input from you, so anytime an opportunity is available, you must take advantage.

Talk face to face, via email, telephone, or better yet, write a letter. Your input is critical. Together we can make a difference.
