NEWBERRY — The Rotarian Layperson of the Year will be announced Tuesday morning at the Rotary’s annual prayer breakfast.

The breakfast is a kick off to the holiday season when Rotarians nominate a non-Rotarian in the community who has gone above and beyond their service to help others.

Last year, Denise Cates was the layperson. Cates is a banker and also deeply involved with her community, church and children’s school.

The layperson is announced last and he or she will then speak.

However, prior to that a guest speaker will talk to Rotarians and visitors with a motivational message or whatever they choose to speak about.

This year, John Yates will speak, according to Joe Trainor, co-chair of the prayer breakfast committee. Yates is a friend of Newberry Rotarian Mark Scott.

John Yates, an attorney from Atlanta, Ga. will speak. Yates is a pioneer in the technology law field and has practiced exclusively in this area for more than 30 years.

He is co-writing a book, “The Art of Business Friendship” and has well over 30 honors and affiliations. He is a member of the Atlanta, Ga. Rotary Club.

Last year, U.S. Army Col. Victor Correa was the guest speaker. Correa helped survivors out of the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

The breakfast starts at 7 a.m. and will last less than a couple hours, according to Gregg Evans, the other co-chair for the breakfast committee.

Tickets are $5 and people may purchase them from any Rotarian or the day of. The event takes place at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer’s Family Life Center where a typical southern style breakfast will be served.
