Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) students spoke about their experience at the leadership camp this past summer. Mid-Carolina Coach Emmanuel Dewalt, left; Superintendent Bennie Bennett; senior Cornelius Glasgow; Principal Ray Cooper, right; Yarelie Mitchell highlighted RYLA at Rotary. RYLA is a week-long summer leadership program for high school students. Rotary clubs all across the state sponsor students in their district to attend the camp. The students are usually rising juniors and seniors at their high school. The staff at RYLA are all former students that have gone through the program. This summer Mid-Carolina High School students Glasgow and Mitchell attended RYLA. DeWalt, teacher and coach at Mid-Carolina High, attended RYLA as a rising high school senior and has been back every summer to work the camp. As associate camp director he says, “One of the greatest parts about RYLA is watching the transformation of students from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning. The relationships formed at RYLA are like no other. By Saturday morning the students build such a bond with each other that they are in tears before they leave.”
