The New Black Panthers announced this morning by e-mail that they would hold a demonstration at Oakridge Trailer Park Friday and are delivering demands to local and state officials today.

What the militant group is calling a “pre march vigil” will take place at Oakridge Trailer Park at 7 p.m. where murder suspect Gregory Collins lived on June 2 at the location where he shot and killed Anthony Hill. Collins then drug the 30-year-old black man 11 miles.

The march is still scheduled for Saturday with the gathering starting at 3 p.m. at Wise Street Park. The march begins at 5 p.m. and will go from Wise Street down Johnstone Street to College Street and the Courthouse.

Also the group released seven “demands for justice for Anthony Hill and black people in South Carolina.”

The demands are reportedly being delivered to Governor Mark Sanford, state legislators, congress members, Newberry County officials, law enforcement, prosecutors and Newberry Mayor Ed Kyzer.

“Collins has been arrested, but yet to be indicted or charged with a hate crime, even though the Black Lawyers for Justice and the New Black Panther Party claims that their investigation has uncovered that white supremacist flags and dozens of high powered guns were found in Collins’ trailer and racist tattoos were found on his body, according to their sources,” said New Black Panthers leader Malik Shabaz.

However, Collins has been arrested and is being held without bond. He faces the state murder charge, which carries a sentence of death or life in prison. There are no hate crimes in state law but the federal government can charge him with a hate crime in addition to the state charges.

The demands of the group are:

• Justice for Anthony HIll

• For federal hate crimes to be brought.

• A defense against white supremacist violence.

• Justice for black residents in the state.

• An end to police harassment and racial profiling in the state.

• Self-improvement in the black community.

• Reparations and compensation for 400 years of slavery, Jim Crow, legalized segregation and suffering by the colony and state.

"Reparations and compensation for 400 years of slavery". The new black panthers need a history lesson. The people of Africa sold the slaves to the white traders. It's not like we went over there and stole these africans from their families. And do any of these militant members even know anyone who was a slave, no because there was a civil war which freed these people. If you want back pay for the cotton that was picked? How much was the working mans salary? I'll give you a cow for your ancestors years of hard work And dedication on someones platation.

You black panthers are the ones stirring up racial unrest in our quiet town, you better make sure you are not biting off more than you can chew.

All you people ever do is play the race card.

And obviously you don't understand crimes of passion.

Not everything in life is related to race. Wake up and stop Standing with your hand out.. I want reparations for all the taxes I pay for you to be on welfare, while I work over 40 hours a week and try to better myself, my family, my race and secure a future for my white children.

I work to pay my bills and the government doesn't help me. There is no reason you can't hold a steady job and get off of welfare and stop spending my hard earned money. I believe the black race has received enough reparationstrough Medicare, wellfare and food stamps for 1000 extra years of slavey.

Very well put oneopinion and navycva42. I cannot help but believe it was no coincidence that this group chose the Wise Street area for their meeting given the amount of anger and violence already there among the young people. They are seeking recruits and who better than the impressionable youth? Paris Lewis (Shabazz's real name) needs to go home to Washington and find something to do there.

I hope before ANYONE in Newberry marches with these Panthers, they take time to read about their cause--joining in because they are Black is a mistake--by marching with them-you agree to their beliefs.

I would take some pics of the march so I could re-evaluate my circle of friends--

the quiet of newberry is about to be disrupted by a proponent of hate and bigotry. we don't need it, and don't want it. let the justice system work as they want it to for black criminals. shabazz, go home, the black clergy has denounced your group of hatred and dissention. as for reparations, nobody owes anybody anything. king would roll over in his grave if he new of this uncalled for demonstration of ignorance and racism. there are new tennants in the home where collins lived, are they ready to be invaded and targeted? just because they now live there. "I have a dream" is about to get kicked in the mouth. sheriff foster, get out the riot gear.

Is Collins not in jail? What more do they want? They call for justice against white supremists, but what are they in nature? This is coming from a group that has called for the extermination of jews and white babies. What Newberry better worry about is these military dressed members coming into Newberry with their night sticks and intimidating voters like they did in Philadelphia. The good people of Newberry should stand up and denounce this.
