NEWBERRY —The Newberry College Speers Street School will have a courtyard to honor Mike and Denise Reid for their generosity and support.
The Reid family’s love and loyalty to Newberry College was a key factor in their hard work and dedication to the Speers Street School project. They sponsored two golf tournaments which generated interest and donations for the project.
The courtyard will be named the Reid Courtyard and will feature a walking tour of South Carolina for elementary students to integrate science and social studies.
“Newberry College is blessed to have such a wonderful family like the Reid’s to share and value our vision for the importance of education,” said Scott Joyner, vice president of institutional advancement.
Newberry College purchased the old Speers Street Elementary School property from the School District of Newberry County and plans to convert the building to house the Department of Teacher Education and Sport Professions (TESP). The building also will contain an innovative Institute for Teacher Leadership and will incorporate the college’s first graduate degree, which will be offered for practicing teachers. Teacher education at Newberry College is poised to increase in stature and ability in the coming years thanks to the Speers Street renovation project and the Reid family.
The Reids are very proud of the fact that their son, Zeb Reid, and daughter-in-law, Angela Sease Reid, graduated from Newberry College. Since Zeb Reid’s time at Newberry, Mike and Denise Reid have been actively involved in many efforts to advance Newberry College.
Mike Reid has served on the board of trustees for several years and is currently the chief engineer of program maintenance for Norfolk Southern. Denise Reid is a retired teacher from Georgia’s Gwinett County School System. Zeb Reid is the athletic director at Mid-Carolina Middle School.
When talking to Mike Reid, it’s apparent that he is passionate about Newberry College. Denise Reid describes her husband by saying “give him half a minute and he will attempt to talk you into sending your children or grandchildren to the school. He believes in the college’s mission and is an ardent supporter of the school and its students.”
