LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Only one person filed to run for the vacant mayor position in Little Mountain.

The filing deadline was noon Friday for the small town with less than 300 residents.

Town Clerk Cindy Farr said she received the application Thursday and it must now be verified by the elections commission with the county.

The verification process will have to wait about a couple of weeks, said Brenda Rogers of the Newberry County Voter Registration Office.

Because there was only one applicant, the special election originally scheduled for April 2 will not be needed.

The applicant would automatically be mayor as long as the verification process passes, Rogers said.

The mayor vacancy occurred after Marty Frick, a write-in candidate in the General Election, declined the position for personal reasons. Former mayor Buddy Johnson, who was mayor for 16 years, did not want to continue his service either.

Currently, Mayor Pro Tem Melvin Bowers is acting mayor.
