NEWBERRY — The Newberry High Lady Bulldogs have now won a seasonal high six straight games as they never trailed in their 68-49 victory Tuesday in the Scott Gym over Abbeville.

Newberry now has a one-game lead over Ninety Six in the regional standings. A win at Ninety Six this Friday would mean that the Lady Bulldogs would only have to win one of their final two regular season games next week in the Scott Gym to claim the region outright.

In the waning seconds of the first quarter, Arnasia Boyd notched an assist to Tyshira Bates as she drained the three at the buzzer for the 19-10 lead.

Newberry’s 12-3 run in the second quarter, as Abbeville only got their points from the free-throw line during this time, sent the Lady Bulldogs into the locker rooms with a 31-13 advantage.

With Newberry leading 35-27 with 4:29 left in the third quarter, a personal foul was called on Abbeville, sending Newberry to a 1-and-1 opportunity at the free throw line.

While this was being sorted out on the court, an Abbeville player got called for a technical foul.

After this was called, someone on the Abbeville bench threw down their water bottle, which rolled onto the court, garnering a second technical foul.

Newberry went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line with this opportunity.

Inbounding the ball, Newberry’s Boyd missed the field shot but would be fouled after a steal of the ball.

Boyd converted both free throws as Newberry completed a six-point run before Abbeville ever got the ball on their side of the court.

The Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-3 run for the duration of the quarter after this three foul event.

Boyd had an evening-high 23 points while Bates and Fatima Sims each scored 16 points.

Breanna Mathis finished with nine points while the Newberry scoring ended with the four points of Octavia Grandy.

A total of 64 free-throws were attempted during the game with Newberry going 20-of-31 from there, while Abbeville made 20 of their 33 attempts.
