NEWBERRY — Newberry College’s Kappa Delta sorority members are tweeting away in hopes of winning a contest for their philanthropy.

Kappa Delta members have been participating in the second annual JAB Sorority Spirit Contest by tweeting on the social media website Twitter about the Josh Abbot Band in hopes of winning $10,000 for their philanthropy and a performance by the band.

The sorority at Newberry College is competing with other chapters from all across the country.

There are three phases to the contest. The first phase ended Nov. 12 and had the chapter from Newberry show off their creativity and spirit on Twitter and drive people to their page on the band’s website.

The second phase ends the week of Nov. 19 which is finals week. Between 10 and 15 chapters will be chosen based on their creativity and each final chapter will submit some sort of skit via video that the contest organizers choose. A grand prize winner will then be chosen.

The third phase will allow all of the videos made by the chapters to be publicly displayed so that they may raise awareness for their chosen philanthropy. These winners will be chosen this week.

According to the contest website, the band is receiving more than 160 tweets an hour.

Newberry College’s chapter of Kappa Delta supports several national philanthropies which are: Prevent Child Abuse America, Girl Scouts of the USA, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Va. and Orthopedic Research Awards.
