NEWBERRY — The Newberry Jaycees are proud to announce three recipients of the South Carolina Outstanding Young American awards. Silverstreet Mayor Travis Gilliam has been awarded the Governmental Leadership Award for his contributions to the management and improvement of the town government.

In nominating their mayor, the town council says of him, “Perhaps the most admirable quality about Travis Gilliam is his sincerity and humbleness. He does not see what he does for our town as anything extraordinary. Instead, he sees a need which he is able to fill.”

In addition to his duties as mayor, Gilliam is also employed full time by Senn Trucking of Newberry.

Also recognized was Lynwood Duke, vice president for corporate services at Russell and Jeffcoat Real Estate of Columbia.

Duke is an active member of the community, serving in a variety of volunteer capacities with organizations such as the Homebuilders Association of SC and Pawmetto Lifeline.

“Ms. Duke is absolutely the most professional and dedicated employee I have had the pleasure to work…” said Ron Roe, president/CEO Russell and Jeffcoat Real Estate.

In appreciation for her impact on her community, Duke was recognized as the Young At Heart recipient, an award dedicated to those whose volunteerism over the age of 40 creates a positive influence and serves as an example to others.

Mindy Zimmerman was the final recipient, receiving the South Carolina Jaycee’s Outstanding Business Leader.

Zimmerman first came to Newberry in 2006 through her work with the solicitor’s office. Later, she and her partner, Ben Shealy, opened up Zimmerman and Shealy Law firm in Newberry.

The firm, which opened in February 2009, covers clients in the midlands and upstate South Carolina. After opening her business, Zimmerman and her husband Don moved to Newberry and immediately became a member of the community she had grown to love.

She is a member of the Newberry Jaycees, the Newberry Chamber of Commerce, and participated as a Girl Scouts Alumni for the 100th birthday celebration.
