NEWBERRY — The Town of Whitmire elected Billy Hollingsworth as its new mayor beginning in January.

Hollingsworth faced Chrystal Harsha in the race for mayor after current mayor Tim Carroll, who was mayor for a decade, decided to run for County Council District 1.

Both Hollingsworth and Harsha have served on Whitmire Town Council and decided to challenge each other to help the town of Whitmire.

“I would like to thank the voters for their vote and I’ll do what I can for the people of Whitmire,” said Hollingsworth.

He has six years total as council member, having served one term then taking a break. He will start as mayor in January.

Hollingsworth garnered 292 total votes while Harsha garnered 214 total votes. There were also three write-ins.

Little Mountain

In Little Mountain, long-time mayor Buddy Johnson decided not to run again leaving the residents the only option to write in a candidate since nobody else petitioned to run.

Johnson has served 16 years as mayor but if enough people wrote in his name he has the option to serve again.

There were 110 write-ins for the mayor position in Little Mountain.

The voter registration office said it would not have the write-ins completed for a couple of days, according to Brenda Rogers with Newberry County Voter Registration.

Silverstreet, Pomaria

In Silverstreet, there were 61 write ins for two open council seats and in Pomaria Richard Ringer garnered 68 votes.

Again, write ins for Silverstreet would not be in until a couple of days from now, Rogers said.
