Hendrix, David Ballinger, Sylvia Brock, James Vanlue and Union County’s weatherman, Jack Roper. We send our happy anniversary wishes to Gail and Tommy Vanlue.

In upcoming community events

The upcoming Glenn Bledsoe Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Wednesday, April 10 at noon at The Country Club Of Newberry with a shotgun start. The rain date is April 17.

Daniel Boozer is the coordinator and contact of this now annual tournament and the Facebook page for “Friends of Whitten Center.” The tourney is also sponsored by The Parents pf Whitten Center. All proceeds will go to the Whitten Center and its residents. Dan requests that individuals and/or groups should sign up ASAP, due to the limited number of slots. Dan can be reached at 864-938-3407 or by e-mail at dboozer@ddsn.sc.gov or comment/inbox him on Facebook.

The construction continues on the Whitmire Memorial Library. Library staff Miss Linder said, “That I am really excited about the new look and more space, plus a classroom area.” The Betty Scvhriver room will remain, just have a new look, different space. The class rooms can be a multipurpose room, as the library staff offers summer and winter reading programs, crafts and activities for children and youth. The addition will house the additional computers bays for job searches, research and other Internet interests.

People in the News

Jesse Murphy, Whitmire native known to some of us as “Bassman” (pronounced as Base) was on stage at the recent 80th birthday celebration and tribute for South Carolina Blues icon, Drink Small.

Jesse and several other musicians and members of The Midlands Blues Society came together at the 145 Club in Winnsboro to pay tribute to an original music icon. While there, Jesse performed with Drink and the after show band . Jesse, his brother Del, sister Gail and Lynda are all musically talented. Jesse plays bass at Sims Chapel Baptist on Sundays, as his sister Lynda is the Music Director and sister Gail sings in the Sims Chapel Choir.Jesse and Del both have played in the Mattie Phifer Band with Martha Suber, while Jesse has been on the road with Marvin Sease, Drink Small. The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and Betty Wright.

Be sure to check out the Town of Whitmire Page on Facebook and also the Whitmire Community Updates Page. Former resident Beverly Atkins Burton also known as “Velvet Sue” was reminiscing with the page manager Randall Frye. The talk was about Mrs. Lewis, who at one time owned and published the Whitmire News. This page offers birthdays, obituaries, anniversaries and space for reminiscing. Of course now, we have mobile devices. For the purpose of social media on the go, sign in and read local headlines from The Newberry Observer and The Union Daily Times. Both have Facebook pages, with headline links so you’re Facebooking by phone. The apps are great when you learn to use them. Music, movies, books, food, art, sports, anything is possible. I am loving the book and music apps, research a book or album before you buy it. Now I have to find an app for Atlanta Braves baseball, so I weep on the go.

Alright readers, “Garabund the Deadline Fairy” is here, and he is tapping keys, rolling his eyes. Until next week, send us your news bits, photos, events to: news2cassie@yahoo.com.
