NEWBERRY — Newberry County Councilman Edgar Baker was recognized on Wednesday for his service.

Baker was elected to Newberry County Council in 2005 after former councilman Darrell Gilliam was unable to continue to serve on the council.

Baker was known for his support of economic development, decreasing taxes and privatizing the county nursing home, said Newberry County Administrator Wayne Adams.

Adams added that Baker was also the councilman who championed the airport, which has seen many improvements over the past couple of years.

Baker also suffered through his years on council after his fellow councilmen elected to sue him for the construction of the Highway 219 sheriff’s office, which was condemned due to mold issues a couple of years after it was built.

With Baker settling with the county on the suit he continued to serve a second term and lost in the primary election in June.

In light of his defeat, County Council Chairman Buddy Livingston said that Baker still attended “everything” and examined each situation with intelligence.

“You have a lot to be proud of,” said Livingston of Baker’s career on council.

“You have proven to be a scholar and a gentleman,” said Councilman John Caldwell.

Baker said it has been an honor and privilege for him to serve the people of Whitmire and Bush River.

He says he is looking forward to retirement.

“All I have served with on county council and the support staff are the best group I have ever worked for,” said Baker, adding he can also call them friends.

“I am proud to have served with you,” said Councilman Bill Waldrop.

A reception was held for Baker after the Wednesday council meeting.

Scott Cain won the county council seat and will be sworn in to the office in January.
