NEWBERRY — Groundhog Day will be celebrated in Newberry with a free showing of the movie by the same name at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Opera House.

The showing is being billed as a couples night out but anyone is welcome, said Newberry Assistant Manager Matt DeWitt.

“Kids and singles are welcome,” said DeWitt. “It is open to all.”

DeWitt said it is up to parents to decide if the movie is appropriate for their children to see.

The movie event is free and admission will be on a first come first settled basis.

In addition to the movie, downtown restaurants and bars will be offering specials for moviegoers. DeWitt said most of the downtown eateries and bars will be participating.

The next family movie will be shown March 1.

The city also is working on plans for a progressive dinner March 6 that will allow patrons to try different parts of a meal at different downtown establishments.
