PROSPERITY — The Mid-Carolina High School football team ended its first week of practice for the upcoming season, with a scrimmage against Chester County’s Lewisville High School.

Coach Louie Alexander, head football coach, has high hopes for the team’s upcoming season.

“The team is much improved, it is the biggest and strongest team we (MCHS) have had in five years. There is a lot of promise with this team,” Alexander said.

By the end of the scrimmage, Alexander held the same faith in the team that he had during the team’s pregame warm up.

“The team played pretty well we have to work on some stuff, but overall I was very pleased,” said Alexander.

What pleased Alexander the most was that the team had zero turnovers during the scrimmage. Alexander said there were some breakdowns on the offensive line, but believes that was due to a lack of communication. He also said, even though teams never tackle well in a preseason, the team ended up tackling well.

Alexander said the team’s biggest rivals this year will be Newberry High School and Chapin High School. To play the best game against MCHS’s rivals, along with the other teams, he plans on using a spread gun offense and an odd stack variation defense.

Assistant coaches for this year’s team are Erik Barber, Kyle Branham, Ethan Campbell, David Coats, Emmanuel DeWalt, Daniel Gregory, Jackie Harris, Ken Longshire, Charles Seibert, David Smith, Eric Thompson and Gary Wilbanks.

MCHS alumnus Erik Barber officially joined the team as its newest coach after Newberry County’s School Board officially approved his hiring last month. Barber is the only new coach for the team this year.

“I am looking forward to getting these guys back in winning shape,” said Barber.

The team will have another scrimmage on Tuesday when they will play Cherokee County’s Blacksburg High School at their field in Blacksburg.
