NEWBERRY — The Newberry College volleyball team is ranked fifth in the initial NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings, which were released late Wednesday.
Newberry had an overall record of 16-8 at the time the rankings were compiled, with all of those matches counting as in-region competition.
The Wolves are the fourth-highest ranked South Atlantic Conference team, behind top-ranked Wingate, third-ranked Lincoln Memorial and fourth-ranked Tusculum.
Newberry plays at Tusculum on Friday night in a key match for both regional and SAC play.
The conference tournament winners from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas along with the top five other ranked teams on Nov. 25, will qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament.
Newberry qualified for the NCAA Tournament as the seventh seed in both 2011 and 2012 and became the first Division II school from the state of South Carolina to win an NCAA Tournament match.
