WHITMIRE — Whitmire’s new arts council Pearl of the Piedmont Artisans Guild got off on the right foot Tuesday evening by starting some of its first projects.

Together, the members created decorative paper placemats that are being delivered to the women’s prison in Greenwood.

“We shared some laughs and shared different techniques of drawing, coloring and painting while doing the place mats,” said Laura Duckett, secretary of the group.

Duckett said they also discussed several upcoming activities for the group and elected officers: Peggy Brickles was elected president, Jackie Seymore was elected vice president, Duckett was elected secretary, and Rebecca Brandon was elected treasurer.

Brickles said she was honored to work with the other members in the guild.

“Our members are like-minded people and want to see the community of Whitmire as well as the surrounding area and want to be actively involved in the growth of the entire county of Newberry,” Brickles said.

Brickles said the group has already met two of its most important goals — establish a name for the group and elect officers. Some of the group’s other short-term goals include creating bylaws, as well as planning events for the future.

Their goal is to have a first time painting class in acrylics, as well as a class in oil painting.

“Although it seems we are mostly about painting, we plan to offer other classes in other art forms,” Brickles said.

Pearl of the Piedmont Artisans Guild also will work with the Economic Development Board in Whitmire to participate in their events this year and encourage other groups to participate as well.

Currently the group is meeting at Rebecca’s Salon, 505 Church St. in Whitmire, but Brickles said they eventually want to have their own building where they can display artwork, have meetings and conduct classes.

The town of Whitmire has also offered to let the group use its facilities when needed and the library has offered class room space.
