PROSPERITY — A Newberry man who was shot during an incident at a weekend block party that resulted in the death of another man has been charged with the man’s murder, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
Jonathan Sentel Dominick, 29, of 623 Caldwell St., was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder after he was released from the hospital. The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. July 20 during a block party on Rikard School Road.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene in response to a complaint and as they approached the crowd, estimated to be over 100 people, they heard gunshots.
Zemeckis Monteco Devante Houston, 19, of Newberry, was shot in the head and died from the wound, Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said.
The coroner’s report concluded Houston died immediately, with the official cause of death being listed as a laceration of the brain from a gunshot wound to the head. Newton declined to release any additional information, citing the ongoing investigation.
The NCSO said there is no indication Dominick was shot by Houston but investigators said the shooting was related to an ongoing dispute between the two.
Even though an arrest has been made, the investigation continues. Law enforcement also is investigating the actions of the people at the party.
“We ask that anyone with information please come forward. Since it was such a tightly packed group, we feel sure someone saw what happened,” Sheriff Lee Foster said.
