NEWBERRY — A teenager was killed after being struck by a train on Saturday in the City of Newberry, officials said.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said Chamone A. McGraw, 16, was killed instantly after being struck by a northbound CSX train near Cline Street.
The incident occurred at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Newton said McGraw was walking southbound on the railroad tracks. Newton indicated that the victim was walking with his head down and might not have heard or seen the train due inattentiveness while using a cell phone.
Newton said an autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma. The death was ruled an accident.
The incident is being actively investigated by the Newberry City Police Department and the Coroners Office. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene and with family notification.
