NEWBERRY — The Newberry City Police Department reported the following incidents:

— William Armfield III, 36 of 205 Drayden Street in Lexington, was issued tickets on June 21 for unsafe vehicle, failure to register vehicle, no proof of insurance, driving under suspension, drug paraphernalia and simple possession of marijuana. According to the incident report, officers passed Armfield on a moped traveling above the speed limit for a moped and a tail light that was cutting on and off.

At the traffic stop, the officer noticed the scooter had two house wall switches to cut on the scooter and the lights and that it had no markings. The seat was held on by PVC pipe, the motor had oil all over it, the back shock was leaking and rubbing on the back tire, the battery was on top of the gas tank, and there were exposed wires hanging and dragging the ground.

Armfield had no papers or bill of sale for the scooter. His information came back that his license was under suspension. When searched, a multicolored box with a small amount of marijuana and pipe was found in his backpack.

— Lucretia Mendenhall, 40, of 1201 Chapman Street in Newberry was charged with shoplifting on June 24. Officers responded to Walmart in Newberry in reference to a shoplifting. Walmart loss prevention stated they had Mendenhall on video surveillance attempting to take items from the store. Mendenhall admitted to shoplifting and was placed under arrest and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center. Mendenhall was also placed on trespass notice.

— Goldie Dean, 40, of 922-A Suber Drive in Newberry, was charged with public drunkenness on June 27. Reporting officers were patrolling around Main and Drayton streets when they observed Dean stumbling at the intersection of Main and Drayton Streets. According to the incident report, Dean smelled of alcohol when he spoke, could barely stand and needed assistance standing. Dean was placed under arrest and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center.
