NEWBERRY — Brandan Davis, a former University of South Carolina football player, will host a football camp June 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at Newberry Middle School.

The camp will be partitioned into two distinct parts — the physical and the spiritual.

Davis began playing football at the age of eight and has amassed a formidable amount of technical knowledge which he now imparts to young, aspiring athletes.

The spiritual side came a little later as a high school senior when Davis had a brush with death.

He was participating in a fall football camp when he became critically dehydrated and was transported to the emergency room.

“I was literally five minutes away from dying,” he said.

At that moment he said “something clicked” and he began to realize there was more to life than just football.

Wanting to take his game to the next level, Davis said his grades weren’t quite up-to-snuff for Division I and instead signed on to play collegiately at Carson-Newman.

While there a coach led Davis to accept Christ which he said has had a great impact on his life.

“I think differently, I act differently,” he said.

Davis remained ambitious in his football career and in 2008 walked-on to USC’s squad and earned a scholarship the following year.

He said playing for head coach Steve Spurrier as a defensive back was an “awesome” experience and described his coaching style as “laid back” — contrasting the reputation Spurrier earned while at the University of Florida.

Davis went on to write two books — The Faithful Walk-On (also the name of his foundation) and The Swag Mentality.

He said he considers himself blessed based on the opportunities God has given him and he feels obligated to return the favor and give back to the community — specifically the Newberry community as both Davis’ parents attended Newberry schools and later Newberry College.

His camps cost just $5 per athlete and he said he’s not trying to get rich off anybody but instead spread his message of faith.

The camp will take place rain or shine with the option to move indoors should the weather be unfavorable.
