NINETY SIX — Ninety Six National Historic Site and the Carolina Skygazers Astronomy club invite the public to a free, family friendly Find Your Park After Dark – Star Gazing Program from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. July 9 at the Star Fort Pond off Kinard Road.

The Carolina Skygazers will have various sized telescopes available to view the celestial bodies. Club members will be available to talk to visitors about star navigation during the colonial period. Visitors can also learn about light pollution and the effects it has on the night sky.

This program is heavily dependent upon having a clear sky, so please contact the park the day of the program to verify the forecast. The phone number is 864-543-4068.

Bringing a flashlight is recommended but make sure to place a red translucent material, such as red plastic wrap, over the light. Doing this will insure that you and others do not get blinded and make for a better experience.

To get from the park visitor center to the Star Fort Pond turn right out of the parking lot onto S.C. 248. Turn right on Johnston Road and stay strait until the road ends at S.C. 246. Turn right and go about 1 mile. When you come to a fork in the road take the right fork, Kinard Road. The pond is a half mile on the right.

Ninety Six National Historic Site is a unit of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution Parks Group within the National Park Service. The group mission is to protect, preserve, and interpret the significance of the decisive battles where America earned its freedom.
