NEWBERRY — One advisor and nine students from Newberry Academy’s Junior Civitan Club attended the Junior Civitan State Convention in Myrtle Beach recently.

The purpose of the weekend was to award the different clubs for their hard work and projects, elect state Junior Civitan board members, and to give the students from different clubs a chance to meet new people and grow close with them.

Prior to the trip, the Newberry Academy Junior Civitans attended every district event: C.O.A.T held at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, an overnight trip in Charleston referred to as Funfest, and the Winter Service Project hosted at Saluda Shoals.

During the state convention, which was held April 29 through May 1, the Newberry Academy Junior Civitan club was acknowledged with a certificate of participation for each event they attended.

The club also won second place for Winter Service Project participation due to the club donating the most items to Sister Care, a shelter and rehab facility for battered women and their children.

Newberry Academy also won second in the Collection Selection project. The Collection Selection project is a statewide can drive competition between all of the clubs in the district.

Three students from Newberry Academy were elected to the 2016-2017 South Carolina Junior Civitan District Board: Amy McJunkins was elected Area 3 Lieutenant Governor, Amber Suber was elected Sergeant in Arms, and Kathryn Wilbanks was named State Chaplin.
