DREHER ISLAND — Seventeen special needs youth took part in a Cast for Kids event on June 13 at Dreher Island State Park, thanks to the efforts and contributions of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club and Midstate Dove & Quail.

Cast For Kids is a national non-profit organization that conducts fishing events for special needs kids.

Sammy Crouch, a member of Midstate Dove and Quail Club, was contacted by the southeastern regional director of CAST in February about hosting a CAST event.

Crouch is also a member of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club which meets at Macedonia Church near Prosperity. The club agreed to provide the boaters if the funds could be raised for the event. Midstate Dove & Quail agreed to provide $500 for the event.

Each participant was given a T-shirt, cap, Zebco 33 reel and rod and a tackle box. Each boater was also given a T-shirt. A barbecue lunch was held afterward.

Each participant was presented a plaque with a picture of him or her and the boater.

Jeff Barnes, southeastern regional director for CAST, said the event was a success and hopes it will become an annual event.
