NEWBERRY COUNTY — The John M. Kinard Camp #35 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans put up seven Southern Honor Crosses at Ebenezer UMC. The camp identified nine Confederate Veterans buried at Ebenezer and found seven of the graves unmarked. Now all known Confederate Veterans at Ebenezer UMC are properly honored.

The nine names are Pearson Hawkins, J. Calvin Caldwell, J. David Cannon, Thomas Oxner, Meredith Reighley, David Sligh, James Schumpert, Andrew Kilgore and George Lathrop.

The John M. Kinard Camp has made a multiyear commitment to locate and properly honor all of the estimated 1,500 veterans from Newberry County that honorably served the Confederacy in the defense of their homes.
