NEWBERRY COUNTY — Two bids approved for properties owned by the Forfeited Land Commission will put those properties back on the tax roll.

Barry Chambers of Little Mountain bid $300 for a parcel located south of U.S. 25 in Little Mountain. The asking price for the property was $588. The Commission has owned the property since March 2014.

According to Donna Lominack, the parcel connects to property owned by Chamber. Karen Lindler Smith made a motion to accept the bid, Lominack seconded.

McKindra Sheree Thompson of Newberry put in a bid for $1,135.20 for a parcel at 35 Oak Hollow Road in Newberry. The asking price for the property was $1,135.20. The Commission has owned the property since January 2012.

Lominack said the parcel is next to Thompson’s grandmother’s property. The parcel also contains what is left of a brick house. Lominack made a motion to accept the bid and Smith seconded.

In other business, Jay Tothacer, attorney for Newberry County, recommended the Commission not accept two parcels it could take ownership of in the near future. The first parcel is a life estate, which is property owned by someone until they die.

“They have the right to stay there for their life. I advise you do not accept this one and in the future do not accept any life estates. If you take the parcel, you are essentially serving as a landlord and not getting any rent from it,” he said.

Lominack made a motion not to accept the life estate property. Smith seconded.

Tothacer also recommended the FLC not accept roads in the Foxbriar Subdivision.

“Reason I am suggesting we hold off on deeding this to you is because this may be taken care of because of a special tax district,” he said.

The Commission will hold off on accepting this property as well.

The Forfeited Land Commission is expected to receive just over 30 properties from delinquent tax forfeitures in the near future.
