NEWBERRY COUNTY — Matthew Dorn Womack of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded the 2015 Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year award.

The award is named in recognition of Deputy Lawrence Bragg III, who died in the line of duty in June 1989. The award is presented to a deputy sheriff who has shown dedication, loyalty and leadership above and beyond the call of duty. The individual epitomizes the image of a law enforcement officer and the standards of the Sheriff’s Office.

When considered for this award, the quality and quantity of work contributed by the individual, leadership abilities, and the overall performance as a commissioned employee was considered. Participation in extra Sheriff’s Office activities and duties were also considered when making this nomination.

“Matt has worked hard and provided concrete proof that he is as advertised. He came to this organization to work hard and prove himself and has not failed to impress since joining our organization,” Sheriff Lee Foster said. “He’s excelled in every area of assignment, has not missed a beat since joining the Investigations Division, and is one of the most dedicated and committed employees with the sheriff’s office. The citizens of Newberry County should be proud to have him as one of their own.”

A lifetime resident of Ninety Six, Womack came to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office by way of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation, & Tourism where he had spent more than eight years. After graduating from Ninety Six High School in 2005, he earned an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Piedmont Technical College in 2008.

In 2011 he was hired as a deputy in the Patrol Division of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and quickly earned a reputation as a “workhorse.” His relentless attitude in getting the job done became known throughout the agency and the community.

He was promoted to Investigator in 2014 and was assigned to the Investigations Division and has attained the rank of Sergeant within the division.

He is the son of Neal and Linda Womack of Ninety Six and is married to Lili Kate Clark of Greenwood and they have two children, Emma Kate, 3, and Elliott Dorn, 2.
