WHITMIRE — Whitmire Town Council voted to award a contract to Brown Construction for roof repairs at their meeting Monday night.

The roofs of American Legion Post 70 and a maintenance shed at Whitmire Golf Club are in desperate need of renovations, said Mayor Billy Hollingsworth who cited “major, major leaks.”

After entertaining several other bids, the council decided that Brown’s offer of $5,430 for both jobs was the most viable option.

A motion was made by Councilwoman Debbie Harris and seconded by Councilman Michael Thomas with all voting in favor.

“When you take the two together Brown’s was the least expensive,” Hollingsworth said.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the day after Thanksgiving were added to Whitmire’s list of paid-employee holidays bringing the total to 10.

Councilwoman Chrystal Harsha made a motion which was seconded by Harris and followed by a unanimous vote.

The council also decided to begin charging for copies made at Town Hall.

Black and white copies will cost $0.25 per page while faxes, toll free, long distance and local, will cost $1 per page.

Lt. Michael Moss of the Whitmire Police Department reported for the month of January 93 citations, nine warrants served, 61 incident reports for calls including assault and battery, domestic violence, shoplifting and open container.

The town began January with balance of $9,253 and ended with a balance of $56,387 after deposits and expenditures of $85,113 and $37,980 respectively.

“That’s an indication that the taxes and business licenses are beginning to come in,” Hollingsworth said.

Having begun January with $4,212, Whitmire public works took in $71,820 and spent $67,110 resulting in an ending balance of $8,921.

“We’re under budget on both water and sewer at this point,” Hollingsworth said.

Mayor Hollingsworth reminded Whitmire residents of a town meeting to be held on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Whitmire Community Center.

“It’ll be short, sweet and to-the-point and will allow people to ask any questions they might have,” he said.
