NEWBERRY — The 2016 iteration of Free Family Movie Nights arrives at the Newberry Opera House at 7 p.m. Friday with a screening of 2015’s The Peanuts Movie.

The Internet Movie Database provides the following synopsis for the film: “Snoopy embarks upon his greatest mission as he and his team take to the skies to pursue their arch-nemesis, while his best pal Charlie Brown begins his own epic quest back home to win the love of his life.”

Seating is first come, first served and starting this year there will be no intermission.

“Maybe with a play an intermission is something that you would expect but sometimes with a movie you don’t want to stop the movie,” said Scott Sawyer, director of Newberry’s parks, recreation and tourism department.

First Baptist Church will be serving popcorn and drinks about an hour prior to showtime.

Two additional movie nights will follow on Feb. 13 and March 4 with the films yet to be determined.

“Right now for February 13 there’s not a good family movie that would be new so we may have to pick an old classic or something,” Sawyer said.

He, along with a couple other city employees, takes steps to ensure that each movie shown is appropriate for all ages.

“We go to the pluggedin.com website, which is a Focus on the Family website, and they do good a review to let us know about the content and language and so forth so we’re picking the family movie as best we can,” he said.

Sawyer said Free Family Movie Nights came about as a way for the city to provide events for the community during the slower winter months.

“In January, February, March we didn’t really have anything. Now we have the Chili Cook-Off and of course we have the Irish Fling event. But it was just something that also allows people to see, as close as we can to, a new release without having to drive to Columbia,” he said.
