NEWBERRY — Dr. Victor Vallo, professor and Music Department Chair at Newberry College, believes the quality of the music program continues to grow.

“The music department of Newberry College continues to grow in quality performance and quality students,” Vallo said. “The vision is to continue to see growth out of our students so that they can showcase their talents for the Newberry community.”

Vallo said the music faculty and staff are proud to share the vision.

Vallo received his Bachelors of Music in Music Education with Performance Honors (Trumpet) from Syracuse University and was awarded a Masters of Music from George Washington University in Music History and Analytical Studies.

Vallo then pursued and received a Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting. He has been the music director/conductor of a number of orchestras, one being the South Carolina All-State Orchestra.

Vallo has published a number of articles on conducting and music education.

His work can be seen in the Applications of Research in Music Education and the Journal of the American String Teachers.

Newberry College offers three undergraduate degrees in the music program, one being the Bachelor of Arts in Music. This program includes General Music, Church Music Emphasis, and Music Theory Emphasis. A Bachelor of Music Performance is another major offered at Newberry.

This major is for students who are leaning more toward the area of performance. The areas of emphasis are Vocal Music Concentration and Instrumental Concentration.

The third and final major is a bachelor of Music Education. If an individual is interested in becoming a music educator or band director, this is the major to select. Newberry College offers five minors in the musical concentration as well for those students who love music and have an interest for it, but don’t really know if they would like to make a career out of it. These areas of interest include music, jazz studies, church music, music business and musical theatre.

Upcoming events from the music department include several concerts throughout the fall and spring.
