PROSPERITY — The 2015 American Legion World Series champions will serve as the Grand Marshals in Prosperity’s upcoming Christmas Parade. The announcement was made at Prosperity Town Council’s meeting Tuesday night.

“The American Legion World Series champions captured the heart and the passion of the Newberry/Prosperity area and created a sense of pride among all of us,” said Prosperity Mayor Derek Underwood. “It was my honor to present awards and certificates of recognition to the players from our local area including the Town of Prosperity.”

The parade is scheduled to take place Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. Prosperity’s website describes the annual tradition as “truly a small town Christmas event that is envied by many a town. Floats, bands, clowns, and all the usual parade antics march down Main Street celebrating the season and the fellowship of each other.”

This year’s theme is “Christmas Stories Come to Life.” All parade participants are required to choose their favorite holiday book or movie and make it “come to life.”

“We’ve got a good many entries in the parade. (We) still need some more,” said Karen Livingston, Town Administrator. “Prosperity has typically been a last minute town.”

Entry forms can be found at www.prosperitysc.com/page/parade.

Livingston also spoke on the progress of the Town Hall relocation.

“We are up and running in the new building. Anybody that hasn’t been there we invite you. We’re hoping to have an open house the first week of December during our customer appreciation,” she said.

However, Livingston did report a few growing pains in the moving process.

“We have a printer that’s possessed. It works and then it doesn’t. We can’t fax anything so if you need to get in touch with us you’ll have to call us.”

Overall, however, Livingston was very positive regarding the new facility.

“We got some snazzy phones that are working really good,” she said. “It’s a great move. The people that have been in have been very receptive to the move. They really are giving us a lot of good feedback that they like the drive-through. We’re just so excited to be there.”

Under old business the council was updated on the status of Prosperity’s Capital Project Sales Tax proposals.

“We have a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) with the engineers from the county at 3:30 p.m. to go over our projects and start feasibility studies and pricing for the actual submission,” she said.

If approved, construction could begin on the second phase of Prosperity’s new Recreation Complex.

Mayor Underwood inquired as to whether the fact that Newberry County and other municipalities are also seeking CPST monies would impact Prosperity’s chances for their submission’s approval.

“I guess it will be up to the committee how they prioritize,” Livingston said.

However, Underwood believes the town has a good shot based on their current recreation draw.

The meeting also contained the second readings and subsequent unanimous approvals of the Newberry Electric Cooperative Pole Agreement and an ordinance rezoning the Epting property on Broad Street to general commercial.
