NEWBERRY — A 24-year-old man was killed Sunday morning during a birthday party at the Drayton Street Community Center, 507 Drayton St.

“The call came in at 2:55 a.m. There were two victims, one 24-year-old male was dead on arrival with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. A 23-year-old male was shot in the lower torso and is in fair condition,” Interim Chief of Police Roy McClurkin said.

The younger victim was transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital.

At this time the name of the victims have not been released. McClurkin also said there is no concrete suspect at this time, but they are looking for persons of interest.

When police arrived, a majority of the crowd was seen leaving the area. Officers spent Sunday locating and interviewing witnesses.

As of Monday morning, police were still developing a suspect in the case.

“We are asking if anyone witnessed this incident or has any information in this case to contact us immediately,” McClurkin said.

According to some of the witnesses interviewed, some type of altercation led to the shooting.

“Sad that in this day in age people decided to resolve conflict with firearms,” McClurkin said.

The case is still under investigation by the Newberry Police Department with help from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and the Newberry County Coroner’s Office.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newberry Police Department at 803-321-1010.
