NEWBERRY — Mayor Foster Senn officially signed a proclamation earlier this month declaring Memorial Day weekend as “Poppy Day.” Senn asked that all citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.

After World War I, the poppy experienced exponential growth throughout Europe and would later symbolize the blood shed over these former battle fields. On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion family to memorialize soldiers who fought and died during the war.

Each year, members of the American Legion family distribute poppies with the request that the one receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

This event is celebrated around the world, and will be celebrated in Newberry on May 26 at the start of Memorial Day weekend. Representatives from the American Legion will be accepting donations for the poppies at various locations including Walmart, Harvey’s, Food Lion and Lowe’s.
