NEWBERRY COUNTY — The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individual who shot a man multiple times this weekend.

“We need the public’s assistance in this because we are not getting a lot of information from the people who were on the scene. They can call 803-321-2222, or they can call Crimestoppers (1-888-CRIME-SC), and with them (Crimestoppers) they can be eligible for a reward,” said Sheriff Lee Foster.

Foster said the victim was shot four times after he and another man got into a verbal altercation while several men were grilling outside a home on Adelaide Street on Saturday. The suspect, who has not been identified, pushed the victim then started shooting at him. A family member took the man to Newberry County Memorial Hospital and he was transferred to a Columbia area hospital.

“I would like to commend Newberry County EMS and the Emergency Room Staff at Newberry County Memorial Hospital for their gallant efforts in their medical treatment of the victim,” said Foster. “I am convinced that the victim is alive today because of their actions.”

The victim is in stable condition, and Foster said they have high hopes they can interview him soon.

Newberry City Police officers who were in the area heard the gunshots and radioed for assistance. Deputies and investigators responded and processed the scene, gathering physical evidence and taking witness statements.

While law enforcement believes the witnesses know who the suspect is, they have yet to identify him. Foster said that they are continuing to follow up on several leads they have received.

Anyone with information about the incident or the shooter is asked to contact the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office at 803-321-2222 or to email information to tips@ncso.sc.gov. They can also call 1-888-CRIME-SC.
