NEWBERRY — Newberry’s Post 24 and Chapin’s Post 193 will again bring American Legion baseball to the community this summer.

Over the past three years Chapin-Newberry has a amassed a 53-15 record which includes three League 8 championships, one state championship, one Southeast Regional championship and one World Series championship.

This year’s team will be led by Head Coach David Coats, Pitching Coach Dell Lever, and Assistant Coaches Amp Robertson and Marion Baker.

League 8 senior teams include Chapin-Newberry, Lexington, West Columbia, Pelion and Aiken. All Chapin-Newberry Home Games will be played at Newberry College.

Other important games/dates include the 11th annual NC-SC Challenge to be held at Sumter’s Riley Park from June 16 through June 18.

Teams from South Carolina (Florence, Sumter and Chapin-Newberry) will play a three-game series with teams from North Carolina (Rowan County, Wilmington and Pitt County).

Florence was the 2016 SE Regional runner-up and Rowan County was the 2016 World Series runner-up. Chapin-Newberry also will play the 2016 World Series champions from Texarkana on June 23 at Florence’s Legion Field.

Last year was the inaugural season for Newberry Junior Legion. They finished the season in second place in League 8 with an 8-5 record.

Head Coach Joey Smith will be joined by Ronnie Bannister to lead the Junior Team. Newberry Junior Legion will play other League 8 teams from Lexington, West Columbia and Aiken as well as home and away games against teams from Union and Rock Hill.

Home games for the Junior team will either be doubleheaders with the Senior team at Newberry College or will be played at Newberry High School’s Bill Harvey Field.

Chapin-Newberry Senior Legion and Newberry Junior Legion baseball tryouts will be held at Newberry College’s Smith Road Complex on May 6.

Tryouts are open to players from Dutch Fork, Chapin, Mid-Carolina, Newberry, Newberry Academy, Whitmire and Clinton high schools.

Senior Legion players with birthdays on or after Jan. 1, 1998 are eligible to try out. Players with birthdays on or after Jan. 1, 2000 are eligible to try out for the Junior team.

Tryouts will start at 9 a.m. for Seniors and 2 p.m. for Juniors.
