Diabetes workshops

NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Council on Aging will be hosting diabetes self management workshops, beginning Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. with sign up for classes. Classes will be held on Thursdays during the following weeks. This is a six-week session sponsored by The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence.

Boy Scouts Dinner

NEWBERRY — The Boy Scouts will honor Jim Clamp of Newberry at the annual Friends of Scouting dinner on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Country Club of Newberry.

Clamp will be awarded the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award. Clamp was a longtime Boy Scout volunteer.

In addition he’s a noted local historian with the Newberry County Historical Society and is an active member of Central United Methodist Church.

Also at the dinner, another good year for Boy Scouts will be celebrated, and attendees will have the opportunity to to make a financial pledge to support local Scouting programs. Those wishing to attend the dinner should call Alice Courtland of the Boy Scouts at 828-301-7139 by Feb. 20.

Forestry Focus

NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Forestry Association and Clemson Extension host the 16th biennial Forestry Focus program on Feb. 25.

Forestry Focus provides a great opportunity for those interested in forestry, wildlife, and natural resources to learn about current issues.

Topics include Current Timber Market Trends in South Carolina, Planning a Timber Sale, Timber Tax, Deer Population and New Legislation for the 2017 Deer Season, Tree Farm Update, First Time Landowners: What to Consider Before and After you Buy Property, and Insect and Diseases Common to South Carolina.

Forestry Focus will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Piedmont Technical College in Newberry. A $10 registration fee includes lunch. Pre-registration is needed for a head count for lunch. The deadline to register is Feb. 17.

Registration information and forms can be picked up at the Newberry Extension Office, 1860 Wilson Road in Newberry.

Head Start

NEWBERRY — GLEAMNS Head Start/Early Head Start is accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year.

To be eligible for Head Start, children must be 3 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017. To be eligible for Early Head Start infants must be eight weeks old. For applications to be processed the following is needed: the child’s birth certificate or other proof of child’s age and proof of family income from the previous 12 months (2016 Form 1040, W-2, check stubs, etc.).
