Notable Siemens Customers in South Carolina

South Carolina Department of Transportation: The South Carolina Department of Transportation relies on Siemens’ Mobility Concert intelligent traffic software to help manage state-wide traffic systems. The software brings information from separate systems across the state into one platform to provide operators with better visibility into traffic patterns in order to mitigate congestion and improve flow.

Orangeburg Department of Public Utilities (DPU): The city’s largest consumer of electric power, the Orangeburg manufacturing plant, was experiencing costly power outages and approached Orangeburg DPU seeking a solution. Siemens was selected to install a smart grid power feeder system that reduced power outages. Siemens worked with the utility to design technology to transfer power in milliseconds rather than minutes.

Duke Energy – W.S. Lee Natural Gas Combined Cycle Facility: In 2014, the Public Service Commission of South Carolina approved plans for Duke Energy Carolinas to build and operate a 750-megawatt natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant at the existing W.S. Lee Steam Station in Anderson County, South Carolina. Siemens will provide the two gas turbines, a steam turbine and balance of plant (BOP) electrical systems.

BMW: Siemens helped to convert BMW’s Spartanburg factory into a state-of-the-art facility. Siemens implemented a total of seven key solutions in the final assembly operations – from the joining of the chassis and the engine through different conveyor systems to the complete automation system. Today, more than 150,000 of the BMW Roadster Z4 and the SAV model X5 are produced here annually by the facility’s approximately 4,500 employees. Recently, BMW decided to extend the production to include other models without increasing the factory floor space. This project required extensive conversions including the replacement and enhancement of nearly half of the existing systems. Siemens acted as general contractor for a total of seven projects and acted as a sub-contractor in another three units. The two-line assembly system was converted into a one-line system. At the same time, it was enhanced with the latest manufacturing technologies.

Boeing South Carolina: Boeing South Carolina is home to the company’s second 787 Dreamliner final assembly and delivery facility. The site also fabricates, assembles and installs systems for aft (rear) fuselage sections of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and joins and integrates midbody fuselage sections. Completed aft and midbody sections are delivered to final assembly in Everett, Washington, via Dreamlifter, or are moved across the campus to final assembly in North Charleston, S.C. Siemens’ automation and electrification equipment is used in several processes at Boeing in Charleston, including controlling and orchestrating highly automated robotic cells and the use of Siemens CNC technology for machine tooling in final assembly.

Siemens has more than 35 PLM software customers across the state South Carolina, such as: Mercedes-Benz and Lockheed Martin

Siemens and Clemson University

Siemens recently provided Clemson University with an in-kind software grant with a commercial value of $357 million, the largest in-kind grant in the university’s history. The software will be incorporated into student coursework and projects related to computer-aided-design, engineering simulation, industrial design, digital manufacturing and manufacturing management in Clemson’s College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.

Through the in-kind investment, Clemson students will have access to the same Siemens product lifecycle management (PLM) software used by more than 140,000 companies throughout the global manufacturing industry– including 35 in South Carolina – to design, develop and manufacture some of the world’s most sophisticated products in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical devices, machinery, shipbuilding and high-tech electronics.
