NEWBERRY — Christmas is coming to Downtown Newberry so it’s time to celebrate the start of the season with lights.

Now in its ninth year, the annual Main Street Lights is scheduled for November 18th from 6pm-8pm.

Come as early as 5 p.m. to see the Southern Victorian Society in full period costume caroling at the tree. Then starting at 6 p.m. local organizations will be giving away a variety of goods such as free homemade cookies, goodie bags, candy canes, and popcorn.

The official Tree Lighting Ceremony of Main Street Lights begins at 6:30 p.m., accompanied by the Little Mountain Elementary and Gallman Elementary School choirs. This year Mayor Foster Senn will light the tree with a special guest from WIS news.

After the lighting, take a walk through downtown and listen to strolling carolers. The Newberry College Madrigal Choir and others will perform familiar Christmas tunes. Faux snow will fill Memorial Park and Main Street, Astwood Park, at the Tree, and Memorial Park will be decorated.

“The Polar Express” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at The Ritz then stay for the 8 p.m. showing of Shenandoah at the Newberry Opera House.

North Pole Nights will be on display from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays from Dec. 2 through Dec. 23.
