NEWBERRY — Cole Watson has been named AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after he showed his versatility in a 34-7 win at Brevard on Saturday.

The senior wide receiver was pressed into emergency punting duties and performed admirably. His four punts traveled an average of 49.5 yards apiece with a long of 56 yards, the fifth-longest of any South Atlantic Conference punter this season. He placed one punt inside the 20 and an additional two went for touchbacks.

Watson also continued his normal special teams duties for the Wolves, holding on all five PAT attempts and returning three Brevard punts for 25 yards, including a long of 16. His exploits were key in Newberry winning its seventh straight game overall and eighth consecutive SAC contest dating back to last season.

Watson totaled three catches for 32 yards on the afternoon, becoming one of six Newberry receivers with at least 20 yards on the day and moving within 138 yards of cracking the top 10 in receiving yards in school history. He has been a key contributor to the Wolves’ current seven-game winning streak and is the conference’s third-leading receiver with 543 yards in 2016, an average of 67.9 per game.

The award marks Watson’s first weekly honor from the conference office at any position.

Newberry returns home Saturday hoping to retain the Bishops’ Trophy as the Wolves host Lutheran rival Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m.
