Staff Report

COLUMBIA — A Newberry man and two South Carolina drug offenders were among 46 federal convicts whose prison sentences were reduced by President Barack Obama as part of a larger effort to ease the punishment of those serving more time than their crimes warranted.

Officials said in a statement on July 13 that sentences were commuted for Douglas Lindsay II of Newberry, Kevin Matthews of James Island and Donald Vanderhorst of Charleston.

Lindsay, Matthews and Vanderhorst were convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Lindsay was convicted in 1996 and was sentenced to life in prison.

Matthews was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to 19 years in prison. Vanderhorst was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The men are scheduled to be released Nov. 10.
