HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Newberry Wolves scored a whopping 24 runs in the first game of Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial for a 24-4 win, but the Railsplitters took the series with an 11-6 win in the day’s second game.

Newberry is now 15-13 overall and 7-6 in SAC play and will host Francis Marion on Tuesday. The Wolves travel to Augusta State on Wednesday and then have a SAC series at Lenoir-Rhyne next Friday and Saturday. LMU is now 12-14 overall and 8-7 in the league.

Game One: Newberry 24, Lincoln Memorial 4

The Wolves pounded out 20 hits with Andy Vogel earning six RBIs and Eric Barbieri driving in five runs on the way to a dominant victory.

The Railsplitters scored three runs in the first inning before 20 consecutive runs by the Wolves.

Barbieri hit an RBI single, Chas Goodwin drew a bases loaded walk and Vogel hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the top of the second.

Newberry took the lead for good in the third on an RBI double by Brandan Sheridan and a sacrifice fly by JoJo Bradley to make it 5-3.

Albert Baur pushed the lead to 7-3 in the fourth with a two-run homer to left-center.

The Wolves blew the game open in the fifth on a two-run single by Vogel, an RBI hit from Jermale Paige, a two-run single by Bradley Nichols and Barbieri’s three-run homer. The lineup wrapped around and another RBI single from Vogel pushed the lead to 16-3 by the end of the inning.

Newberry added four runs in the sixth on Barbieri’s sacrifice fly, an RBI when Bradley reached on a fielder’s choice and another two-run single by Vogel to make it 20-3.

LMU earned a run in the seventh on Scott Miller’s RBI single, but the Wolves ended the game on a high note after a three-run homer by Ryan Cranmer and a Zach Morgan RBI double in the ninth for a 20-run margin of victory.

Newberry starter Jonathan Rosenberger enjoyed the fruits of the offensive outburst, moving to 5-0 on the year after allowing three runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings. Evan Brown earned his first save of the season with 3.0 innings of effective relief, allowing one run on four hits.

Vogel was 3-for-5 with six RBIs, Barbieri was 2-for-4 with five RBIs, Sheridan was 4-for-5 with a run driven in and Baur and Nichols was had three hits and two RBIs. Goodwin was 0-for-2 but drew four walks, tying the South Atlantic Conference record.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 11, Newberry 6

The Railsplitters put up seven runs in the fourth inning to take the series win.

Newberry took the lead in the second inning on a two-run triple by Bradley and held the Railsplitters scoreless until the big inning.

Trailing 7-2 after four, the Wolves cut into the lead on a three-run homer from Nichols in the fifth to narrow the deficit to two runs. LMU put up two runs in the fifth on a pair of extra base hits.

Adam Lawson hit a pinch hit solo homer for the first round-tripper of his collegiate career in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-6, but LMU tacked on two in the bottom of the frame. Newberry got two runners on base in the seventh, but both were stranded to give LMU a 2-1 series win.

Nichols was 3-for-3 with the three-run blast and a walk, while Barbieri was 2-for-4. Daniel Nations allowed six runs in 3.1 innings to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Friday’s game

The Newberry Wolves pounded out 16 hits and three homeruns, but the homestanding Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters exploded on offense for a 20-9 LMU win at Lamar Hennon Field in the opener of a South Atlantic Conference series Friday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 14-12 overall and 6-5 in SAC play, while Lincoln Memorical is now 11-13 overall and 7-6 in the league. The two sides will close out their SAC series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.

Freshman Bradley Nichols had a breakout game at the plate in his first varsity collegiate appearance, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs on a double and a homerun. His second inning RBI double started the game’s scoring and he was plated on an RBI single by Chas Goodwin to make it a 2-0 Newberry lead in the middle of the second.

LMU took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second, but Newberry tied the game up in the top of the third on solo homers from Jermale Paige and Ryan Cranmer to knot the game at 4-all.

Unfortunately for Newberry, the Railsplitters scored nine straight runs to take a 13-4 lead after six innings.

The Wolves’ bats came alive in the top of the eighth to narrow the margin. Nichols hit a two-run homer down the left field line, Andy Vogel bashed a two-run double and Paige had an RBI single to cut the Railsplitter lead to 13-9 and give the scarlet and gray hope. The hosts quickly turned the momentum directly back into their favor, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.

Besides Nichols’ fantastic hitting day Eric Barbieri, Albert Baur, Paige and Vogel each had two hits apiece. Alex Roberts fell to 2-3 on the year after allowing eight runs in four innings on six hits.
