Born on January 18, 1932 in Newark, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Edmond George and Cecil Ker Carley. Dr. Carley received his Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Florida in 1957, his Master of Arts from the University of Florida in 1961, and his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Indiana in 1968. Dr. Carley was a Political Science professor at Newberry College for 33 years where he served as Department Chairman. He was presented with Certificates of Appreciation from Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Regan and George W. Bush for his work with in the Republican Party in South Carolina. He received a resolution from the South Carolina state senate for his outstanding contribution to education in South Carolina. He enjoyed Politics, wood working, and poker, but his greatest love was his family.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Joan Carley; children and their spouses, Robert Mason (Loan Dang) Carley, Patrick Keegan (Susan Bootle) Carley; Charles Eric Carley and Ann Mary (John S.) Keenan; sisters, Cecil Carley Boyd and Elizabeth Carley Hammel; a brother, Edmond G. Carley; grandchildren, Benjamin Mason Carley, Allison Maura Carley and Elyse Linnea Carley. Dr. Carley was predeceased by his first wife and who was the mother of his children, Norma Jean Carley.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2011, at McSwain- Evans Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
