NEWBERRY — The Newberry High Bulldogs fell 7-0 to the Emerald Vikings at the Greenwood High Jamboree.

After being held to a three-and-out to start the game, Newberry punted as an Emerald bad snap 10 plays later prevented a 41-yard field goal from being good with 10:50 left in the 20-minute contest.

Newberry quarterback Yafari Werts was intercepted two plays later as the pick was returned 47 yards to the Bulldog’s 13. The Vikings got the game’s only score two plays later with a 12-yard touchdown pass before the successful PAT with 7:28 left on the scoreboard.

Werts would be intercepted again six plays later but Emerald would be forced to punt after a three-and-out.

Getting up to the 40, Newberry punted with 35.9 seconds left and Emerald took a knee for their last offensive play of the evening.

Newberry ended the night with 39 yards of total offense while Emerald finished with 37. Werts had 16 yards rushing on six carries, including an 11-yard sack.

In the other games of the jamboree last Thursday, Saluda and Ware Shoals finished in a scoreless tie, Ninety Six shut out McCormick, 28-0, while the host Eagles defeated Abbeville 16-6.

Newberry open its season on Aug. 29 when it hosts Union County.
