SWU receives $6k for Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center

May 15, 2014

MYRTLE BEACH – It was a welcome surprise for Southern Wesleyan University’s development staff and alumni when, as the 2014 Carolina Women’s Retreat concluded, they received the news that Wesleyan Women Retreat Committee voted to donate $6,000 to benefit the David and Shirley Duncan Children’s Ministry Lab, located in the Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center at Southern Wesleyan University in Central.

The lab is named for two alumni, who together have been pouring out their lives into young people residing at Hephzibah Ministries, located in Macon, Ga., since 1989. Shirley Duncan serves on staff at Hephzibah as director of public and church relations and David Duncan is the campus chaplain. Shirley, who grew up at Hephzibah as a child, attended Southern Wesleyan and met her husband David when they attended the same Greek class.

“The Southern Wesleyan University family is so blessed to consider Shirley and David Duncan friends, but more than that, as SWU alums, the Duncans’ life and ministry are shining examples of how the Lord uses his people to do His great work,” said Southern Wesleyan University President Todd Voss. “So many have been cared for over the years by this great duo, and now future students with a calling to children’s ministry will be blessed for decades to come from this gift in their honor.”

“Southern Wesleyan University profoundly appreciates the work of Shirley and David Duncan and is delighted to accept this gift in their honor,” said Lisa McWherter, vice president for advancement at Southern Wesleyan. “We thank the Duncans for their dedicated careers in ministry and each donor at the retreat that made this special gift possible.”

Also, Shirley Duncan addressed the retreat as their keynote speaker, delivering a message of hope.

Five hundred attended the retreat, which for the past three years has been a combined gathering of women from the South Carolina District, the North Carolina East District and the North Carolina West District.

Donations can be made payable to Southern Wesleyan University and mailed to SWU Development Office, P.O. Box 1020, Central, SC 29630. Please notate how you want your gift to be directed on the memo line. Online donations can be made at for the Duncan Lab or at for other projects.
