Well, the results are in, and the first Scarecrow Convention is deemed a success!
At least those are the sentiments for those of us here at your Chamber. In a short period of time, this event went from an idea in the mind of M.C. Yarbrough, to a concerted effort by the Newberry Jaycees and your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce.
Overall there were 37 entries which covered Pomaria, Prosperity, Silverstreet and Newberry. The bulk of scarecrows were in Newberry. However, the impact of this event was encouraging. So much so, that we have overheard people discussing what they plan for next year.
The judges told us their task was extremely difficult and time consuming. Due to the quality of the scarecrows, it eventually came down to the “attention to detail” as one of the deciding factors used by the judges to determine the winners. The judges took almost five hours in their exhaustive process.
I was reminded of this “attention to detail” during a recent discussion. I had not closely examined one particular example, and after I was reminded to take a closer look, it became evident that one needs to examine the detail our contestants build into their creations.
So, this is a caution for you, do not just drive by. Instead, stop and inspect closely, and you will be surprised. We believe many people in our county, after watching this year’s convention unfold, will be ready for next year, and the results will be even more exciting.
So, how about you? Do you have time to examine the scarecrows? Well, you have time since they will be on display until Saturday, Nov. 2. We believe it is completely possible for the number of contestants at next year’s convention to double. The question is this: will you step up, design and win next years competition?
You have almost a year to invent the best scarecrow in Newberry County. Start planning today and do it for the unity.
