Scherrens to players: Give it your all

NEWBERRY — The president of Newberry College presented a message of concentration and giving it your all to the members of the Touchdown Club and student athletes on Monday night.For 22 years, Dr. Maurice Scherrens was an NCAA Division I football official and during that time, he officiated games including the 1991 Gator Bowl, 1994 Fiesta Bowl, 1999 Vegas Bowl and the 2011 Cotton Bowl.Because of that experience, when a flag is dropped at a football game, he said everyone turns to him to see what penalty the officials on the field are going to call.

Whitmire student places first in NFL PPK sectionals

Hunter McCullough, a 10th grade student at Whitmire Community School, attended the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick sectionals held Oct. 18. After placing first at the Newberry NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition, he went on to place first in the sectionals at Lugoff-Elgin High School. McCullough is waiting on the results from other sectionals to see if he qualifies for the regional competition to be held at Carolina Panthers stadium Dec. 14.
